Filipino maid (domestic worker) Magarita Umbrero is a nanny, cook and a housekeeper too. She is now available for a quick hire.

Background
Margarita is 30 years old and married. She has 2 children aged 6 and 9. She is from the province of Cagayan (about 12 hours from Manila by bus) where her husband plants rice on his own farm. Her father is also a farmer. She is the eldest in the family with 3 siblings. She has a secondary education and speaks English quite well.

Employment History

  1. Her job as a domestic helper was when she worked for a family of 3 in Ilocos Norte (her father's province) from 1998 to 2001 soon after leaving secondary school. Her host family consisted of her employer, spouse and an unmarried daughter. Her duties were cooking, cleaning, laundry.
  2. She first came to work in Singapore in Nov 06. Her employer Sally P had 2 children initially, aged 4 and 14. A few months later she gave birth to a 3rd child. Sally was a working mother and left care of the baby Darren to Margarita. The 4-year spent the better part of the day with his grandfather living close by. The 14-year old was quite independent. In Jul 08 Madam's mother returned from Canada after an extended visit with another daughter and volunteered to take care of Darren. So Margarita went home when her services were no longer required.
  3. She returned to Singapore in Sep 08. Her host family consisted of her employer Ramesh, his spouse and their one-year old son. Madam was pregnant and decided to go home (to India) to deliver her baby. Margarita declined Ramesh's offer to let her continue working for the family but this time in India. That was in Nov 08.

Ramesh assessed Margarita positively, rating her 9 out of 10 for Overall Performance. For details click to see Employer's Assessment

  4. So after 2 months Margarita went to work for one Louis. Mistake! The residence of the employer and the residence as shown on the work permit card were not the same. She did not have a valid work permit! So she has the blessing of MOM to seek a new position.

Cooking
As a housewife in the Philippines, Margarita cooked Filipino food for her family. She learnt to cook Chinese food from Sally (Employer 2 above). When she went to work for Ramesh (Employer 3 above) she assisted Madam when she cooked - cutting chilli, tomato, etc. While in the employ of Louis she also did the cooking (as Madam here was working).

She learnt to cook Chinese food from Sally's mother. She considers herself a good cook "because they say" it is good.

Childcare

  • She took care of or helped to take care of 2 children while in Sally's employ. They were a newborn who arrive 3 months after she started work; and a 3-year old (who spent much of the day in his grandfather's house).
  • She took care of or helped to take care of Ramesh's one-year old son.
  • Her last employer Louis had one child, a 10-year old boy. Madam was working.

Among the things she does for children in her care are story-telling, reading to them, playing with them and teaching them. The activity depended on their age.

Personality
Margarita is neat and tidy in appearance. She dresses simply. She is cheerful, fairly outgoing and is fairly prompt in responding to questions asked.

Since the above profile was prepared for Margarita, she had gone to work for a local family of 4. Margarita was one of two domestic helpers. The other helper has been there a lot longer.

Update

Since this profile was created in 2009 for Margarita, she had gone to work for a Chinese couple. Madam had one son aged 5 then, now 7 years old. The child is autistic. Besides attending to his physical needs such as bathing him and preparing his food for him, Margarita played with him him and helped him with his homework.

Margarita did not do much cooking except for the boy as Madam often stayed out and had her dinner out.

Update

21 August 2011.

Currently Margarita is working for Sandra a Singaporean Eurasian. The family consists of 6 persons, none below the age of 18. Margarita's duties are cleaning the house, washing and ironing, gardening, washing two cars and walking the family pet dog, German Shepherd.

The family live in a 4-storey semi-detached house and there is much cleaning to do.

Margarita finds managing the house a challenge as this is the first time she works in such a big house.

Her forte is childcare and she would prefer a family with children.
