This profile was prepared for Marie in 2006. See update below for current information.

Filipino maid (domestic worker) Marie Sebastian is a nanny, cook and a housekeeper too. After 6+ years with the same employer, a Singaporean Chinese, she is now available for transfer. From the province of Ilocos Sur, she is 28 years old and single. Her hometown of Masingal is about 10 hours from Manila by bus. She is the eldest among 5 children. (Typically, the first born has more initiative and has been more successful at work.) Her late father used to be a farmer. Now the children operate the farm.

Currently she is in the employ of Catherine - a working mother of two children. They were 8 months and 2 years old respectively. Marie was able to handle the job from day one. Although Madam's mother-in-law live just one floor above, she never found it necessary to come down and supervise Marie. That she did a good job, there is no doubt as Catherine finds Marie .... reliable, responsible and honest among other things.

Childcare includes not only the physical requirements, also the mental developments. Marie tells them stories or read to them and occasionally tutors them. The children are now in Primary 1 and Primary 2.

Cooking
Marie is a self-taught cook for Madam never did find the time to teach her. Marie relies on cook books for instruction. Now, after 6 years cooking for the family is able to cook Chinese food. She is adventurous enough to cook up her own concoction which the family found acceptable.

Personality
Marie, a universtity graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, speaks English very well. She is soft-spoken and speaks sensibly. She is neat, tidy and smart in appearance. Marie has completed an 8-month part-time course (6 hours every Sunday) in Healthcare Management. Some of the subjects include

  • CPR for children and CPR for adults
  • giving medication
  • taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure)
  • dressing wounds
  • preventing more damage in a fracture
  • changing diaper, etc.

Besides practical at a nursing home at Geylang Poly Clinic, she also worked at Salvation Army Nursing Home in Changi Village for 3 months as a volunteer, during which period she received no pay nor any reimbursement for bus fare.
