Filipino maid (domestic worker) Evelyn Lagrimas is a nanny, cook and a
housekeeper too. She has been a live-in domestic helper for 4 years -
3½ years in Singapore and 6 months in her own country. She is now
available for immediate hire.
Background Born in Manila, she moved to adjacent province Cavite,
her mother's province. She is
33 years old
with one son aged 12. She has been separated from her husband for the past
10 years and has been her son's sole supporter. Evelyn has done 2 years of
college (intending to do Education, but had to give up her dream of becoming
a teacher for lack of money). She speaks English quite well.
Her late father was a construction worker. She is the youngest among 5
children.
Job History
Before coming to work in Singapore she had 3 temp jobs; she also worked 2
factories in the quality control section for a total of 8 years. In
Singapore she worked for 3 employers as follows:
- From Aug 08 to Nov 08 she worked for a local Chinese family of 4.
The 2 children were already 16 and 28 and Evelyn concerned herself only with
the housekeeping - cooking, cleaning and laundry. The family lived in a
3-storey semi-d with a common swimming pool. Evelyn just could not cope and
asked for a transfer.
- From Nov 08 to Aug 09 she worked for another local Chinese
family.
The only child in the family was 6 at the start. Evelyn had to commute
everyday: during the day she and the 6-year would spend the day in Granny's
house. She spent the day there as if she was working for Granny (doing the
laundry, cooking and cleaning while Granny and Grandpa attended to the
child) and returned to her employer's house at the end of the day where she
would do laundry for her employer, clean, etc. Evelyn's day was long and her
request for transfer was granted.
- Since then (Aug 09) she worked for yet another local Chinese family. The
2 children in the family were 6 and 9 at the start. Madam was working and
left care of the two children and the housekeeping to Evelyn. After
2½ years she was "caught red-handed", i.e., in a raid by MOM Field
Force, working in a house not specified in the work permit. And now after
2½ years, MOM has given her permission to seek alternative
employment.
Childcare
Of the 3 situations, Evelyn was only required to take care of the children
aged 6 and 9 (Job 3). Evelyn accompanied both of the children to and from
school, played with them when time permitted, read to them or told them
stories.
Cooking
Evelyn can cook Filipino food, popular dishes such as sweet and sour pork
Filipino style, fried rice, noodles, adobo (chicken and/or pork) stewed in
dark soya sauce with vinegar, chicken curry Filipino style, sinigang
(tamarind-based vegetable soup) with chicken, pork, prawn or fish, pork chop
Filipino.
In Singapore her employers never found time to teach her and she relied on a
cook book for instructions. Her Chinese cooking is probably rudimentary but
with some instruction she should improve.
Personality
Evelyn is neat and tidy in appearance, simply dressed with short hair (by
Filipino standards). She speaks and understands English quite well.
