Asian maid (domestic worker) Siti Fatimah is a nanny, cook and a housekeeper too. She has worked in Singapore for about 4 years and will be going home on 19 Dec 11. After a short vacation she would like to return to work in Singapore.

Background
Siti is from Central Java. Her hometown of Cilacap is 12 hours from Jakarta by bus. Her parents sell vegetables in the market. She is 2nd among 6 children. She has a secondary education (9 years). After working in Singapore for 4+ years, she can speak and understand simple English, enough for this interview for her profile.

Work History
She has not worked in her own country and started her first job in Singapore.

  1. Her first situation (2006 to 2008) was with a family of 3 including one unmarried daughter. Madam stayed at home. Siti's duties were cooking, cleaning, laundry/ironing. Siti worked for her for 2½ years before going home.
  2. She returned to Singapore in Apr 10 to work for another Chinese family. This time her main duty was to take care of an elderly woman of 82 who was in poor health and although she was still mobile, she needed help when walking and Siti had to be close by at all times in case she needed help. Siti used to accompany her to the hospital for checkups.

Cooking
Fatimah can cook Indonesian food. Before coming to Singapore she used to cook at home as her mother was busy selling vegetables in the market. In Singapore she learnt to cook Chinese food and during the 4+ years in Singapore she used to cook Chinese food for her host families.

Some of the dishes she is familiar with are:

  • chicken curry, steamed chicken
  • chicken rice and nasi lemak (Granny's favourite), laksa, goh hiang
  • fish curry, assam fish, fish head curry
  • sayur lodeh (an Indonesian dish which she adapted for her Chinese family and visitors)
  • pork trotters stewed in soya sauce, fried pork slices
  • fried or steam prawns, chilli crab

She learnt to prepare goh hiang from the old lady in her second job. She says that she used to prepare goh hiang (and other dishes) for friends who used to come and visit the old lady.

Personality
Siti is soft-spoken, alert and attentive. She is able to furnish information for this profile without too much hesitation. Apparently she has an interest in cooking and can cook welll.
