Background
Elena is from Rizal, adjacent to Manala. She is married (but is separated
from her husband) and is a mother of three children aged 8, 17 and 21. Her
eldest, a boy is working but the two younger ones depend on her for
financial support.
Job History
Before leaving for her first overseas job, she had already worked in her own
country for 6 years in a restaurant as a waitress.
- She first went abroad to Dubai in Sep 93 when her children were 4 and 1
years of age. In Dubai she worked for a family of 6, with 4 children aged
12, 10, 8 and 2. She was 1 of 3 maids. The 3 domestic helpers shared all
aspects of the work, but Elena spent more time cleaning. She thinks she is
good at cleaning. She worked in Dubai for 4 years form Sep 93 to Nov 97.
- From Feb 98 until Feb 00 she worked in Taiwan. Her employer had
3 children aged 2 months, 2 and 3 years.
Madam attended to her family business and left the childcare to Elena. The
children slept with Elena who took care of their every need. Granny did the
cooking and had another helper laundry and cleaning. At that time a foreign
domestic worker could not extend her work permit and Elena could not stay
although the children and their mother would have liked her.
- The next five years she was self-employed, operating a
convenience story (using her income from Taiwan for capital). She found it
hard to manage her finance, so she had to go abroad again.
- This she did in Sep 05 when she went to Saudi Arabia to work for a
family of 6. The 3 children in the family were 14, 11 and 2. Madam (from
Lebanon) was working. She was the only domestic helper there, but she
managed it - taking care of the children, cooking and cleaning - for
3½ years. Elena left when Madam went home to Lebanon with her
children.
- Since July 2009 Elena has been working for an octogenarian living with a
handicapped son, bedridden when at home and now in hospital. Madam's
children have decided to place her in an old folks' home. Madam's son has
given Elena a good report card.
Cooking
In her current position, Elena does the cooking and also while in Saudi
Arabia. However in Singapore when there is an occasion (e.g., Chinese New
Year Eve), Madam's daughter would do the cooking and Elena would assist her.
Elena's cooking is probably about average. However, she looks forward to
learning more.
Care of Children
Elena has taken care of or helped to take care
of 10 children with ages raninging from 2 months right up to 11 and 14. In
addition, Elena has 3 children of her own. She loves children and childcare
is probably her forte.
Although there are no children in her current situation, Madam's
grandchildren do come and visit of special occasions. On such occasions,
Elena shows her affinity with children.
Care of the Elderly / Invalid
In her current job she takes care of an elderly woman who at 88 often needs
help moving about, especially when she has to go for her medical checkup at
Changi Hospital or some Polyclinic. Then Elena would push her in her
wheelchair as she accompanies her. Elena also
looks after Madam's bedridden son.
Personality
Elena is pleasant and personable. She is neat and tidy, looks strong. She
speaks and understand English well and it has been easy to prepare this
profile of hers.
